Doubling Down, Weekly Bets, and Another Sports Betting Scandal
Today's Slate
Martingale System: Betting on the Inevitable
In today’s fast-paced online sportsbook world, strategies that promise a steady climb back to profit can be as tempting as that underdog you just can’t stop rooting for.
You’ve probably heard of “doubling down” before.
And that’s exactly what the Martingale system is all about.

Martingale applied to roulette
How It Works in a Nutshell
After every loss, you double your bet so that when you eventually win, you recoup all previous losses plus a profit equal to your original wager.
Place Your Bet: Start with a modest wager.
Double Down on Losses: If you lose, double your stake.
Return to Base: Once you win, go back to your original bet.
Repeat: The cycle continues over days or weeks until you hit that win.
Real-World Example: Doubling Down on MLB
Imagine you like the LA Dodgers to cover a -1.5 run line, and are willing to bet that they will cover this line at some point in the next few games.
Baseball spreads are (generally unique), in that most spreads are set with the favored team given 1.5 points, usually at odds of +100 or higher.
You start with a $10 bet.
If the Dodgers don’t cover, your next bet is $20, then $40, and so on.
Remember, you’re banking on the fact that the Dodgers will win a game by 2+ runs at some point.
When your team finally covers, you’ll recover all previous losses and make a profit equal to your original bet.
Depending on the odds of your winning wager and initial bet, this margin can vary quite a bit.

Pros:
Steady Recovery: A win resets the cycle, increases bankroll, and recovers losses over time.
Cons:
Costly: A long losing streak can quickly deplete your bankroll. How many times are you willing to “double down” before you cut your losses?
Betting Limits: Online sportsbooks often have maximum bet limits that can cap the strategy.
What Markets Does Martingale Apply To?
This strategy can be applied to pretty much any bet type of bet.
Whether it’s a number on the roulette wheel or a team to cover the spread, you can theoretically keep doubling down.
Remember: the more risk your bet carries, the more risk your bankroll is taking on.
If it takes 5 wagers for your double down to hit, your 5th wager would be $160.
6th wager: $320
7th wager: $640
8th wager: $1,280
9th wager: $2,560
10th wager: $5,120
While the idea of guaranteed success is enticing, you’ve always gotta be prepared for a bumpy road if you’re taking this strategy.

This could mean that Precious could slide to PF while Hart slides to the SF position because of the Rockets size with Amen/Eason/Adams/Sengun (questionable) up front.
This will pull Hart away near the rim guarding Brooks/Green.
The Rockets team aren’t the best shooting team also so they should use their strengths in driving to the paint especially with OG ruled out guarding the perimeter.
Not expecting many long boards for Hart here.
If the Knicks go small with Miles at the 2, then Hart will have problems either way IMO against this Rockets front court.
Give me the UNDER here!
On the season, he avg. 13.1 PTS per 25 MIN, and now he gets a matchup for the ages.
A system I've attacked to success aplenty: capable-scoring centers vs. Mark Williams, who is active today for CHA. Starting C PTS (MIN [≥ 20]) vs. Williams since New Year's Day:
🧪 J. Duren 10 (25) 🧪 J. Allen 19 (28) 🧪 W. Kessler 11 (27) | 🧪 N. Vučević 40 (34) 🧪 D. Gafford 31 (34) 🧪 A. Davis 42 (37) |
My projection: 17.0 👨💻
Their offensive struggles and strong rebounding further support the Under 147.5.
In their first matchup this season, Iowa State won 74-57 (131)
Expect a gritty, low-scoring game as both teams focus on defense to rebound from recent losses.
Another Betting Scandal: Terry Rozier
Federal prosecutors are investigating NBA player Terry Rozier for alleged point shaving, focusing on a March 23, 2023 game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Rozier, then with the Charlotte Hornets, played about 10 minutes before leaving due to a reported foot injury.
His performance during that time was notably below average, coinciding with suspicious betting patterns on his game props.
While the NBA's internal review found no rule violations, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York has taken up the case.
This is part of a broader investigation that previously led to the lifetime ban of former Raptors forward Jontay Porter for similar issues.
This case highlights growing concerns about sports betting integrity, especially with the rise of prop bets, alternate lines, and live betting.
As long as there are markets based on individual performance, there’s a chance for something like this to happen.
