Another Year Of Sports Betting. What's Not To Love?

Setting Your 2025 Bankroll

As we dive into another year of sports betting, it’s time to talk about something that can make or break your betting journey in 2025: your bankroll.

Think of it as your game plan for the year - a sweet spot based completely on you.

Here’s how you do it.

Look Back on 2024

Take a moment to review your betting performance from last year.

Were you a high-flying winner or did you take a few too many L's?

Use this to gauge how much you're comfortable risking in 2025.

This should be the total amount you’re willing to lose this year.

  • No matter how well you did in 2024, assume you’ll lose it all.

Set Your Unit Scale

When you’ve got your number, use it to determine how much you’re willing to risk on each bet you place this year.

This is a small percentage of your total bankroll, typically between 1% and 5%.

  • Unit Size = Bankroll x (Unit Percentage / 100)

If your bankroll is $1,000 and you decide on a 1% unit size:

  • Unit Size = $1,000 x (1 / 100) = $10

    • In this case: 1u = $10, 5u = $50, etc.

If you want to be “safer” with each bet, pick a lower percentage.

If you chose to risk 5% of your total bankroll, 1u would be $50.

Why You Should Care

Setting your 2025 bankroll is all about building a strategy that lets you dive into the action with confidence.

By setting clear unit sizes, you can focus on the excitement of the game, knowing you’ve got a solid plan to keep you in the zone all season long.

They also apply perimeter pressure on the opponents opposing point guard and tend to trap them at times after the screen.

Hali tends to pull up for his 3’s and that will be difficult to do when he’s swarmed with defenders in his face.

Look for Hali to be more of a distributor as a result (look at his over in assists if you’re an over bettor).

Blowout potential too for the Pacers who are suddenly playing well. Give me the under on Hali.

While most of these teams didn’t have a defense as strong as Penn State’s, I think the Irish should get plenty of chances early.

This is the most well-rounded offense PSU has played since Ohio State and Oregon, giving up a pair of touchdowns in the first half to OSU and 31 first half points to Oregon.

I see this being a fast-paced game on both sides (Similar to the Penn State/Oregon game), with the ND offense getting plenty of opportunities in the first half.

Another Year In Sports Betting: Wins and Woes

A lot happened in the sports betting industry in 2024, with more craziness sure to come in 2025.

Another Record-Breaking Year

2024 is expected to set a new high-water mark with nearly $130 billion wagered legally in the U.S., continuing the trend of record-breaking years since the Supreme Court's decision to allow states to offer sports betting (2018).

High-Profile Scandals

The year was marred by scandals, including former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter's lifetime NBA ban for disclosing confidential information and fixing proposition bets.

Additionally, Ippei Mizuhara, Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter, pleaded guilty to fraud related to illegal gambling debts, although Ohtani was cleared of any wrongdoing.

These scandals have contributed to a shift in public perception, with some people becoming more skeptical about the sports betting industry.

Celebrity Endorsements and Partnerships

The year was marked by high-profile partnerships between sportsbooks and celebrities.

PrizePicks

DraftKings

These collaborations aimed to attract new audiences and included everything from social media campaigns to exclusive betting events hosted by famous personalities.

The oversaturation of advertising was evident throughout 2024 - Will it slow down in 2025?

Challenges for New States

No new states are expected to legalize sports betting in 2025, with major markets like Texas and California remaining resistant due to political and economic factors.

The Rise of Pick ‘Ems

In 2024, Pick ‘em and DFS apps like Fliff and PrizePicks skyrocketed in popularity, offering fans a straightforward way to engage with sports betting.

Unlike traditional sports betting, which can be intimidating for newcomers, Pick ‘em games offer a straightforward, user-friendly experience.

This has opened the door for a broader audience, including casual fans who might not have previously considered themselves bettors.

From pick’em operators shifting to free-to-play models to sweepstakes sites, this gray-area market is expanding rapidly.

This rapid expansion has also caught the attention of regulators and lawmakers, who are still grappling with the complexities of the legal sports betting industry itself.

The Bottom Line…

The sports betting industry stands at a crossroads, balancing record growth with emerging challenges.

With innovation and scrutiny both on the rise, 2025 promises to be a pivotal year for bettors and regulators alike.

Building Bankroll will keep you up to date on everything you need to know - and drown out all the extra noise.
